The Daniels defend working on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series

After news broke that The Daniels would direct Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Daniel Kwan responds to those who think they’ve sold out.

Several days ago it was reported that Everything Everywhere All at Once directors The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) would helm at least one episode of the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew TV series. I thought that was fun news, but clearly some didn’t as they accused the directing duo of selling out.

Daniel Kwan took to his Instagram Story (via Entertainment Weekly) to address the backlash and explained that they’re only directing one episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. “Lol, all of the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill. These headlines are always misleading,” Kwan wrote. “Don’t worry. We aren’t working on a whole series, we guest directed one episode. Jon Watts approached us to do an episode a while ago (before EEAAO even came out). We love Jon, love Star Wars, love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew, and we needed the days to keep our healthcare (!!!) so it was an easy yes.” The Daniels shot their episode of Skeleton Crew last year, with Kwan saying, “I’m excited for you all to see it.

As far as the future goes, Daniel Kwan said, “Our next film will be an original Daniels project so you can stop worrying (and stop bothering me about it).” The Daniels took home Best Director at the Academy Awards for their work on Everything Everywhere All at Once, as well as awards for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), and Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis).

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew comes from Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts and follows “four kids who find themselves lost in the vastness of the galaxy trying to find their way home.” It takes place in the New Republic era, so it’s possible it could cross over into the events of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. At the moment, the only confirmed cast member of the series is Jude Law, but it’s not known who he plays. With Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 just over the horizon (taking place in London from April 7-10th), we should be finding out more about the franchise.
